RUGBY UNION ENGLAND
Written by Oliver Kellner-Dunk
Over the past few months, it seemed Kevin Durant was detained for a move away from the Brooklyn Nets after demanding a trade request.
The reason for Durant’s trade request was because he wasn’t happy with head coach Kevin Nash and general manager Sean Marks.
He reportedly gave the Nets an unenviable ultimatum, fire the coach and general manager or trade him.
Over the next couple of months, madness ensued as Durant was being linked with a move to multiple teams.
At first, the front runner for his services seemed to be last season’s Eastern Conference Champions as the Boston Celtics were looking to make a deal for the 33-year-old.
Then there was a period where not much happened, followed by a surprise contender emerging as the Memphis Grizzlies tried to work out a trade for Durant.
However, it seems the Nets are the ultimate winners of this situation as not only are they sticking by Nash and Marks they are also going to be keeping Durant this season.
Marks has come out and said the following.
“Steve Nash and I, together with Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai, met with Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman in Los Angeles yesterday,” said Marks.
“We have agreed to move forward with our partnership.
“We are focusing on basketball, with one collective goal in mind: build a lasting franchise to bring a championship to Brooklyn.”
The Nets have been billed as an NBA Championship contender since Durant’s arrival alongside Kyrie Irving, but with the trade saga behind them, this could be their best chance yet.
Especially with the addition of Australian superstar Ben Simmons who could create a big three with KD and Irving in Brooklyn.
Simmons missed the entirety of the 2022 NBA season through injury and a trade saga of his own with the Philadelphia 76ers.
NBA Front Office Insider Bobby Marks has spoken to ESPN since this decision was made and has claimed it wasn’t a surprising one.
“The Nets were waiting for a perfect trade package that never came,” Marks said.
“The lingering question was whether Durant was going to hold out during training camp and become a distraction.
“That was put to bed when both sides wisely ended any trade speculation.”
Now the big question is whether or not Brooklyn’s new look trio can lead them to glory in 2023.
