RUGBY UNION ENGLAND
Written by Oliver Kellner-Dunk
The big story of the NBA offseason has been the trade rumours surrounding Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant who is believed to be unhappy at the franchise and is looking for a new team to join.
Durant has been at the Nets since 2019 but missed most of the season through injury.
In season 2021, the Nets were considered one of the favourites to win the NBA Championship with a fully fit Durant set to take the NBA by storm once again.
They would end up finishing in the Eastern Conference’s second seed before being eliminated by eventual champions, the Milwaukee Bucks in the semi-finals.
Since then, they have failed to reach the same heights, and it seems KD is fed up and looking for new opportunities.
He seemed all but certain to sign with the Boston Celtics this time last month, but a surprise contender for his services has emerged, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
“The Memphis Grizzlies are the latest team to show interest in Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant, league sources told The Athletic,” said Charania.
“The Boston Celtics, Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors are still among the most serious candidates to pull off a trade for Durant, who two weeks ago reiterated his trade request and gave Nets owner Joe Tsai an ultimatum — choose between keeping the 12-time All-Star or coach Steve Nash and general manager Sean Marks.
“Memphis has made new inquiries to Brooklyn about the two-time Finals MVP and has five first-round draft picks (four unprotected selections of their own and one protected via Golden State in 2024) that could be included in an eventual trade package.
“The Grizzlies also have young players such as Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Bane, Brandon Clarke, Ziaire Williams, Kennedy Chandler and David Roddy.”
In recent years the Grizzlies have once again become a consistent playoff team that made the Western Conference semifinals last season with a promising young squad led by NBA All-Star Ja Morant.
Durant joining the Grizzlies would give them further talent and a wealth of experience that could turn them into a Championship-winning team.
