The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets kicked off their preseason when they faced each other in a close game on the weekend that saw the Jets win 24-21.

Philadelphia was winning for the majority of the game after scoring 14 points in the first quarter before the Jets gradually clawed their way back over the next three quarters, scoring 14 points themselves towards the end of the game, which proved the difference maker.

Both teams will be looking for a significant improvement in 2022, with the Eagles just scraping into the playoffs last season and the Jets finishing last in the AFC East with just four wins for the entire season.

During the game Jets linebacker, Quincy Williams took out Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts with a late hit that angered Hurts’ Australian teammate Jordan Mailata.

The former Rugby League player expressed his displeasure in an interview with the Inquirer.

“To be honest, I wanted to charge him with my helmet and headbutt him,” said Mailata.

“That [stuff] is really dirty.

“I don’t give a damn if it’s preseason.

“I don’t like that stuff.

“I’m going to protect my QB.

“That’s the standard here.”

Mailata has also made headlines recently after he sustained a concussion at practice while wearing a guardian cap which was introduced by the NFL to prevent this exact situation from happening.

He once again spoke out about his displeasure, directly calling out the league.

“The hat’s fake news,” Mailata said.

“It doesn’t stop anything.

“I’m sorry, NFL.

“I really do mean that, though.

“It didn’t stop anything.”

Philadelphia will host the Cleveland Browns in their next preseason game and will be hoping for a much better result than they had in their most recent outing.

While the Eagles aren’t being ruled out this season by punters completely, they are not up with the favourites to win the Super Bowl this season and short outsiders to win the NFC Championship.

However, they are favoured to win over half of their games which should be enough to see them secure a place in the playoffs, where they will look to emulate their Super Bowl-winning season of 2018.
