RUGBY UNION ENGLAND
Written by Oliver Kellner-Dunk
It is safe to say Jimmy Garoppolo has had quite the intriguing NFL career thus far.
The quarterback was the 62nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, where he would find himself at the New England Patriots behind Tom Brady, who during Garoppolo’s time at the franchise led them to two Super Bowl victories.
Following the Patriot’s historic win over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, Garoppolo made the move to San Francisco for an opportunity to be the centrepiece of the 49ers franchise.
At first, there were question marks over whether or not the former Eastern Illinois Panther could have an impact as a first-string quarterback in the NFL.
He then proved many of his doubters wrong by leading the 49ers to an NFC Championship followed by a Super Bowl appearance in season 2019.
While the 49era would be defeated by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, Garoppolo showed that he could lead a team to the NFL’s biggest stage.
However, since then, the 49ers have been unable to reach those same heights, and there are rumours that Garoppolo could be traded to the Cleveland Browns.
When the Browns selected Baker Mayfield as the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, he seemed destined to lead them back to greatness, and while they did return to the playoffs two seasons ago, he has since left the franchise and joined the Carolina Panthers.
The Browns brought in Deshaun Watson as a replacement, but due to an off-field situation, he will be suspended for the first six rounds of next season.
It seems instead of waiting for Watson’s suspension to conclude, the Browns are being proactive and are looking to bring in Garoppolo as a replacement, but it won’t be straightforward, according to CBS reporter Johnathan Jones.
“Browns have been operating with a wait-and-see approach,” said Jones.
“They also wouldn’t want to trade for his contract, which means a further waiting game.”
At the moment, the 49ers are being given an outside chance of winning the Super Bowl by punters while the Browns are among the middle of the pack.
