“The Celtics appear no closer to acquiring Durant”: Wojnarowski

After cementing his legendary status with two NBA championships at the Golden State Warriors, Kevin Durant made a huge free agency move to the Brooklyn Nets in 2019.

His move was expected to turn the franchise into an NBA powerhouse, and with the addition of fellow All-Star Kyrie Irving, this team looked set to dominate the league.

Durant was injured for the majority of his first season in Brooklyn, though and the Nets would finish seventh in the Eastern Conference and be swept by defending champions the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the playoffs.

The 12-time All-Star then returned the next season but only played in 35 games.

However, to this point, 2021 has been the Net’s best since Durant joined as they finished in the Eastern Conference second seed and were eliminated in the conference semifinals in a seven-game series against eventual champions, the Milwaukee Bucks.

Last season Brooklyn then found themselves back in the seventh seed and were again swept in the first round of the playoffs, this time by eventual Eastern Conference champions, the Boston Celtics.

To make matters worse, it seems Durant is looking for a trade away from the Nets, with many believing that Boston are the favourites to secure his services, although this is not exactly the case according to ESPN’s Adrian Wajnarowski.

“The Celtics appear no closer to acquiring Durant than others in discussions with the Nets, but Boston’s ability to include All-Star forward Jaylen Brown as a centrepiece in offers does help make the team formidable in its pursuit,” said Wojnarowski.

“There are no deals believed to have traction for Durant, and no team has yet to reach the significant threshold that the Nets have set to trade one of the league’s most talented players, sources said.

“The Nets’ posture on a potential trade has been largely unchanged.

“They want a massive return that potentially includes multiple unprotected first-round picks, pick swaps and impactful players for Durant.”

Other teams reportedly showing an interest in Durant include the Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors.

All three franchises are seeking their final piece to be a real championship contender.
